The setting for this book is not likely to happen in real life. It takes place on a beach called Briny Beach. The Beach is a dirty and busy place. This is where the Baudelaire children got unlucky. So not the best place to live. The setting for this book is very unusual. This setting affects the main characters because of the characters who live there. The characters are very important In the story. Another way it affects them is because of they have nowhere else to live. All their money stays in Briny Beach. So if they left their money it would stay on the beach. That is how the story affects the main characters.
